The loom attracted passersby, who were curious to learn about the project or share their own stories of weaving from days gone by (pictured above). Over the course of the workshops, more than 20 people contributed to Communal Catalogne. Catalogne weavings, or “rag rugs”, are made up of donated scraps of fabric torn from bed sheets, towels, clothing, or other linens otherwise bound for a landfill. This craft has deep roots in Quebecois heritage, originating as a way of repurposing scarce fabrics.
Communal Catalogne, 2022
In collaboration with Selina Latour
In our Mending Matters (2022) workshop series, we partnered with Christine White from the Pedal Box Gallery (a portable exhibition space mounted on a bike trailer), to transport a table loom into public spaces around the neighbourhood of Pointe-Saint Charles.
